Chaotic Shiny is a generator site aimed at people who write, game, or live in fantasy worlds of their own creation. Grappling with writer's block? Need a character on the fly? Party just walked into a tavern and you want it to be a little more exciting than normal? Want to flesh out a setting with some detailed religions? Chaotic Shiny is the site for you.

Generators are divided into rough categories based on what they come up with. Some of them, such as the drink and name generators, are simple, whereas others, such as the civilization and pantheon gens, are much more detailed. If you want a generator that you can't find here, you can make your own with the custom gen builder, or feel free to drop me a line with suggestions or feedback.

Enjoy!

News

5/31/08: A new gen at last! Learning how to program in Java has been stealing all of my gen-making creativity, and other commitments have been stealing my time. After having the ideas for it sitting on my desktop for months, finally the Constellation Gen is a reality. It's a little similar to the not-yet-finished myth gen, so if you've been waiting for that one, this might fill that need.

5/15/08: Various commitments keeping me busy of late, but a new gen at last: the Martial Arts Generator. Generates Asian-sounding names, and style details.

3/17/08: School is keeping me busy, but I did make one new toy of note: the Sentence Gen Builder. As my style of gens has shifted away from list-based and towards sentence-based, I thought I should give anyone perusing the site the opportunity to build their own in that style. It's a bit trickier to use than the original, but it can make some fun stuff. I've kind of stalled out on the myth gen, but I'm sure I'll find more time to work on it eventually.

1/27/08: I haven't abandoned the site; I've just been busy. I was galivanting around Europe for a month, and now I'm back with a lot of ideas and not a lot of spare time. There's the new Country Song gen to entertain you while you wait, and if you're feeling adventurous, you can play around with the myth and folktale gen that I'm working on.

12/20/07: Created and added the Potion generator, complete with side-affects. Mostly intended as a serious gen, though a lot of the potion descriptions do end up fairly zany.

11/21/07: I meant to make another serious gen, since I haven't for a while, but I just couldn't help myself: the Good Idea generator. For when the party can't come up with a cunning enough plan on their own.

11/2/07: For no particular reason, created an added the Bizarre Alchemy generator. Comes up with all kinds of fantastical and utterly useless combinations. Can you find the mystical combination for gold? Or better yet, printer ink?

10/29/07: Finally made something I've been thinking about for a while - the Ritual gen. Anything from your harvest thanksgiving rites to human sacrifice and demon summoning. I may rework it to eliminate some of the really illogical results, but I'm happy with it for now.

10/19/07: Expanded the 'symbol' section of the Religion gen into the much more detailed Insignia gen. Anything from personal crests to guild insignias to holy symbols. I'll probably be tinkering with it over the next few days.

10/18/07: Added the Tournament gen, and rearranged the gen categories a bit. They may stay this way, but they'll likely change again as more things get added. I'm not particularly happy with the Tourney gen in Color, but I didn't want to create an 'Events' category and only have one gen there. I did finally give in and put the Situation gen under Plot; I was never happy with it under People.

10/3/07: Created and added the Zombie gen. About time I did another simple/silly one. I might add a few details later, but for now, it seems about right. Perhaps I'll get into the Halloween spirit a bit early and add some more to Evil this month.

9/14/07: Created and added the Alphabet / Primitive Written Language gen. Yet another one of those pesky gens that I actually had to do some amount of research for. (Not that I'm promising realism.)

9/2/07: Created and added the Crowd gen, based on the fact that I always get amusing results from the "noteable patron" and "noteable locals" sections of the Tavern and Medieval City gens, respectively. This generates brief descriptions of potential passersby. I made it with a street scene in mind, which somewhat limits its utility for parties and the like - I may remedy that later. The good news is that it's not fantasy-specific, and could easily be modern if you substitute "cop" for "guard" and ignore the people with horses and weapons. I may change it so you can set it to modern and do that automatically.

9/1/07: Finished and uploaded the Medieval City gen. Complete with economy, politics, and noteable local characters, just to give you some easy plot hooks.

7/30/07: Created and added the Medieval Games gen. Makes games such as "Catacombs and Citadels" or "Bridges and Barons," with either just names, or names and details. My favourite result so far is "Lyres and Lies," which sounds like a great game for bards. I'm still in the process of tweaking it for cooler results, but I'm happy with what it looks like so far.

7/28/07: Uploaded another old unfinished gen, and changed part of the d10 NPC gen into the character gen. Also redid the home page, tweaked the layout, and changed around the example for the custom gen builder in order to make it more clear.

7/27/07: Redid the entire layout and uploaded the rest of the generators. The site is now functioning! Also updated the About page and categorized the gens.
